Enhance Your Network With Reliable LC Ferrule Components

LC connectors (also referred to as little connecters or local connecters) are among the most frequently used fiber optic connections, offering high density connections through their 1.25mm zirconia ferrule located within a small form factor housing.

An LC connection relies on the quality and design of its ferrule components in order to function optimally, and must be meticulously designed in order to guarantee proper connectivity. To maximize success, ferrule pieces must be meticulously created.

1. Optimal Bore Diameter

Ferrule bore openings should ideally correspond with the center of an optical fiber cladding for maximum power loss reduction. Variations in diameter due to machining marks, scratches or contamination could create gaps that prevent it from making contact with its core and negatively affect performance.

Unfortunately, achieving this requires exact polishing and core alignment during production which means this expensive equipment must only be operated by experienced technicians.

4. Optimal Material Selection

Ideal ferrule performance is critical to fiber optic connectivity, since connectivity issues rely on minute variations. For instance, transmission loss increases if the core center does not exactly correspond with its surroundings cladding; similarly, bore opening must remain perfectly circular to reduce movement between components.

Furthermore, it’s essential that the crimping and polishing process be executed carefully so that there are no defects or irregularities preventing light from passing through. Finally, ceramic must be chosen based on thermal, physical and chemical properties compatible with quartz fiber thermal requirements.

LC connectors are widely utilized in modern high-density optical networks. Also referred to as Lucent Connectors, Little or Local connectors, they feature a 1.25mm zirconia ceramic ferrule with push-pull latch mechanism. At half the size of SC connectors they offer superior alignment properties and low insertion loss as well as being suitable for use in plenum-rated environments.
